Grace – remembering

cartea e minunata si vorbeste despre prietenia dintre fotograf si actrita/printesa.

fricafrica …

frica …

… de Beethoven

I’m still amazed, for example, at someone’s being afraid of Beethoven. I’ve known people who can’t listen to his music because it’s too emotionally arousing or overwhelming for them. But for me, Beethoven’s music was for decades almost as crucial as eating or drinking. His work was a prod into a life of courage, a life embraced totally with all its pain and all its challenges, and for many years I felt that I almost couldn’t live without his music. Had I been afraid of what Beethoven’s music evoked in me I think that fact alone would have given me reason to listen to it, to try and decipher my fears and attempt to understand and get beyond them.

Alan Arkin, an improvised life

***

Meryl Streep

Stephen-King-002Stephen King – On writing

Stephen King – On writing

Around 1960, Forry (who sometimes referred to himself as “the Ackermonster”) spun off the short-lived but interesting Spacemen, a magazine which covered science fiction films. In 1960, I sent a story to Spacemen. It was, as well as I can remember, the first story I ever submitted for publication. I don’t recall the title, but I was still in the Ro-Man phase of my development, and this particular tale undoubtedly owed a great deal to the killer ape with the goldfish bowl on his head.

My story was rejected, but Forry kept it. (Forry keeps everything, which anyone who has ever toured his house—the Ackermansion—will tell you.) About twenty years later, while I was signing autographs at a Los Angeles bookstore, Forry turned up in line . . . with my story, single-spaced and typed with the long-vanished Royal typewriter my mom gave me for Christmas the year I was eleven. He wanted me to sign it to him, and I guess I did, although the whole encounter was so surreal I can’t be completely sure. Talk about your ghosts. Man oh man.

Nobody ever asks about the language.
They ask the DeLillos and the Updikes and the Styrons, but they don’t ask popular novelists. Yet many of us proles also
care about the language, in our humble way, and care passionately about the art and craft of telling stories on paper.
What follows is an attempt to put down, briefly and simply, how I came to the craft, what I know about it now, and how it’s done. It’s about the day job; it’s about the language.

“She never took her purse off her lap!” my mother said afterward of that night, gobsmacked. “She took it to the dinner table!”

If you had told my mother that Didion regularly served elaborately cooked meals to 60 people at a time, on Spode china in a rambling—and very Berkeley—house in the seedy part of Hollywood, and had interviewed Jim Morrison and entertained Janis Joplin, she would have been shocked. Didion seemed like a young woman who had never been to a dinner party without her parents. She seemed like someone who owned one good thing to wear, and would bravely wear it whenever an engagement even hinted at formality.

I can tell you this for certain: anything you have ever read by Didion about the shyness that plagued her in her youth, and about her inarticulateness in those days, in the face of even the most banal questions, was not a writer’s exaggeration of a minor character trait for literary effect. The contemporary diagnosis for the young woman at our dinner table would be profound—crippling—social-anxiety disorder.

***

citesc autobiografia actorului Alan Arkin ( l-ati vazut in Little Miss Sunshine si sper ca veti vrea sa-l vedeti intr-un film care nu va ajunge niciodata in cinema la noi The privates lives of Pipa Lee ) si am gasit acolo urmatoarea poveste.

***
Arkin isi incheie povestirea in felul urmator: “We don’t want to do it; We want to be it. Only we don’t know it. No one tells us.”

si spune ca restul cartii sale, an improvised life, e pentru cei care vor sa fie muzica.

de mai bine de 2 ani, in semnatura mailului meu se afla “trying to be a human being, not a human doing”; nici macar nu mai stiu de unde am luat asta, dar mi s-a parut a fi ceva ce trebuie sa ma calauzeasca. abia aseara citind cartea lui arkin am inteles de ce, desi nu era pe lista mea de cumparaturi, cind am vazut-o in Border’s, am luat-o pur si simplu: trebuia sa ajunga la mine, macar pentru povestea de mai sus.

carticum sa citesti o carte

cum sa citesti o carte

Why is marking a book indispensable to reading it? First, it keeps you awake — not merely conscious, but wide awake. Second, reading, if it is active, is thinking, and thinking tends to express itself in words, spoken or written. The person who says he knows what he thinks but cannot express it usually does not know what he thinks. Third, writing your reactions down helps you to remember the thoughts of the author.

(…)

Reading a book should be a conversation between you and the author. Presumably he knows more about the subject than you do; if not, you probably should not be bothering with his book. But understanding is a two-way operation; the learner has to question himself and question the teacher, once he understands what the teacher is saying. Marking a book is literally an expression of your differences or your agreements with the author. It is the highest respect you can pay him.”

How to Read a Book, scrisa de Mortimer Adler in 1940

This summer we will celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. This is not a once in a lifetime occasion. It is not even a once in a century occasion. It will be a momentous celebration of the sixtieth anniversary of the monarch’s accession to the throne – something which has only happened once before in the UK’s history, when Queen Victoria celebrated her Diamond Jubilee in 1897.

The Jubilee itself will be commemorated between 2-5 June, with events across the United Kingdom. The highlight will be a huge pageant on the River Thames, with a flotilla of over a thousand boats, headed by the Queen’s own Royal Barge – recalling great state occasions of the past when the River was the main thoroughfare of London. It promises to be an amazing spectacle, and a fitting celebration of the Queen’s long service to the United Kingdom.

I know that some in Romania are already getting prepared for the Diamond Jubilee, and school children have been perfecting their English by learning about our Kings and Queens, food, life style, habits, achievements of our culture and by scripting letters of congratulation to Her Majesty the Queen. I am looking forward to awarding prizes in a special language contest organized this spring in Bucharest.

After the Jubilee party, London’s stage will be set for the greatest show on earth – the Olympic and Paralympic games. On Monday 9 January we celebrated the marking of 200 days to the Olympics by raising the Olympic flag at the British Embassy in Bucharest. I am looking forward to a great summer of sport, and expect close competition between Romania and the UK in the rowing lake at Eton Dorney, nearby Windsor Castle. I am also delighted that Romania is sending its largest ever team to the Paralympic Games.

Draga Domnule Ambasador,

All the best

P.S. daca as fi in locul parintilor cu copii de scoala, i-as cam pune pe copiii mei sa participe la concursul mentionat de domnul ambasador.:)

david-lynchDavid Lynch – The World is as you are

David Lynch – The World is as you are

On “Pinky’s Dream,” when Karen O sings, “Are you laughing, or are you crying?,” she’s asking about two very different displays of emotion, which seem related here.

Yeah, there’s a Vedic expression, “The world is as you are.” So two people could hear the same song, and one says, “This is a sad song,” and the other says, “No, that’s really, really happy.” And there’s something about a lot of ‘50s music that had those two things, depending on the [listener] – it kinda held both, would work for both moods.

(…)

Going back to the question in “Pinky’s Dream,” do you sometimes laugh at things that other people would find disturbing?

Oh yeah. But I’m not maybe the only one. In Frank Booth [the nightmarish villain played by Dennis Hopper], in “Blue Velvet,” I saw so much humor, and many times, I would have to cover my face, in his most brutal scenes. I think it had to do with a person that’s so obsessed that the obsession can sometimes, if you look at it at the right angle, be humorous. The person could kill you, but at the same time, there’s some humor swimming in it.

(…)

Is being in a “safe, comfortable” place important for you? I understand you don’t like to sing in front of people.

[laughs] No, I sure don’t! And yeah, it’s super-important. I’m really only ever singing in front of Dean, and he’s not looking at me, and he puts a lot of the stuff [effects] on my voice, so I feel it’s almost like somebody else is singing, and it helps me a lot. If Dean puts certain stuff on the voice, and the music is a certain way, a character can be born.

a story about passion and ham

succes

in editia de iarna a The Paris review e un interviu cu Jeffrey Eugenides. aici un fragment frumos

“Like a lot of young writers, when I started out, I had a dim conception of my material. I wrote about people and places that were vastly separated from those I knew. Then, too, if I tried to write about my own self, the -results were far from illuminating, for the simple reason that I didn’t understand myself too well. As soon as I began writing The Virgin Suicides, however, I suddenly realized that I knew a lot, not about my own psychological -dimensions so much but about the town where I grew up. I knew everything about the people who lived on our old street. I remembered their oddities and family histories, the rumors and gossip, and I remembered the weather, the local legends, the racial tensions, the flora and fauna. I stopped being embarrassed about being from a suburb in the Midwest. I treated it like my own Yoknapatawpha County and, for the first time, produced something that interested adult readers.

de vazut

Am vazut The Ides of March, noul film regizat si produs de George Clooney, cu Ryan Glosing in rolul principal.

Altfel, constat ca imi place din ce in ce mai tare Ryan Gosling (l-am vazut in avion si in prostioara Crazy. Stupid Love si-a fost tare simpatic). ce nu inteleg, in ceea ce-l priveste, e interesul lui in viata privata pentru femeile mult mai mari decit el: a fost iubitul Sandrei Bullock, acum e iubitul Evei Mendez.
